PhD Personal Statement Examples

Your PhD personal statement must be written to perfection if you want to avoid being placed into the “no thanks” pile along with many other applicants. The demand for places on most courses is usually very high which means that getting selected ahead of your competition is very difficult. Your personal statement is your only way to express yourself and make yourself stand out from that competition.

But how do you get your personal statement to stand out and not get placed directly into the pile of rejections? Well there are a number of issues that you must avoid and the following sections will give you some PhD personal statement examples of what to write and what not to write.

PhD Personal Statement Examples

There are many mistakes that students make when writing their PhD personal statement and you must ensure that you avoid them if you want to keep the attention of the selection committee. The following are some of the common areas in which people go wrong giving examples of what is often written and what you should write:

Clichés:

“I have always wanted to be a doctor from an early age.” Imagine how many times that line is written by students wanting to get into medical school and how many times the selection committee has had to read it. The same will go for nurse, dentist, archeologist, historian and so forth.

You should write; “My first visit to the local hospital was a breathtaking experience in many ways, my leg was broken badly but the paramedic was still managing to make me laugh.” Lead them into a real story and show them how you developed your interest from the very start. Make your opening lines interesting to keep them wanting to read on.

Be Specific

“I learned a lot about team, working from my time working as a volunteer.” Be specific, what did you learn and how did you learn it? You should write; “There were several of us that volunteered at the center and for most of the tasks that we were asked to do it was very important that we worked together. It was impossible for only one of us to..” Give actual examples of how you were involved in teamwork and what your role was.

Communicate:

“While masticating on my citrus..” Don’t overuse your thesaurus, if you were eating an orange say “While eating an orange..” The reader needs to be able to understand what you are trying to say without having to decipher every other word.

Proofread your work:

“There words were lost on me as I rode on into the night.” Simple avoidable mistakes will stand out like a sore thumb to the reader. Words such as “there”, “their” and “they’re” must be used correctly. Be very careful to ensure that you don’t just rely on your word processor to find mistakes. Get someone else to proofread your work also.
