John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest

Each May the Kennedy Library Foundation conducts a scholarship essay contest called the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest, which is open to all US high school students. In their essays, these students have to tell a truthful story of how an elected official risked his or her political career.

The Award ceremony is hosted by Caroline Kennedy at the Kennedy Presidential Library where the winner of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest is invited and awarded a $10,000 prize. A second place winner receives $1,000 and all finalists receive a hardcopy of Profiles in Courage.

Students, who are eligible to apply, are asked to write an original 1,000 word essay that demonstrates an understanding of political courage that was described in the John F. Kennedy book. In their research, students should use at least five sources like books, personal interviews, newspapers, etc. They will have to describe the act of political courage by the US official and include the analysis of the risks and consequences of this act.

The John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest is open to all US high school students in grades nine through twelve who are attending public, parochial, private or home schools and to US students under twenty who are enrolled in a high school correspondence/GED program. It is a one time program, so if you have participated before, you will not be eligible to apply again.

Contest essay requirements are as follows. Essays will be accepted starting September 1, 2011 and until January 7, 2012. Each essay can be no more than 1,000 words and they must be original.
